Job in Wales- Front End Web Developer

We are looking for a web developer to join our team. Ideally, you will have a few years experience working in an agency environment, but then again, if you are a graduate and think you are good enough, let us know :)

The most important thing is that you will have an undying love for all things web and building sites using XHTML and CSS, adhering to web standards compliance and accessibility. You’ll be passionate about building your websites to the very highest professional standards. Hopefully, you’ll know your way around the Zen Garden, JavaScript, Ajax and jQuery too.

Any experience of Joomla and Drupal would also be useful.

The quality of build will be your number one priority, but if you have creative talent too, bring it on. You’ll be working alongside extremely talented designers, illustrators and Flashers and any creative and design input you can offer will be gratefully received.

You’ll be working in our Swansea SA1 offices, a stones throw from the sea, in a fast paced, creative environment with 18 talented people. Ranging from ultra-techies and gifted creatives through to unfeasibly organised project managers and information architects, our team work hard and enjoy what they do – this gives us very happy clients and lots of high profile exciting work to do.

You’ll have a pension, plenty of professional development opportunities, good holidays, flexible working, a state of the art working environment and the chance to work with the sort of clients Welsh agencies only normally dream about.

And most importantly, we pay good, hardworking and talented people very well.

The start date is as soon as you can manage.

Send your CV, a quick covering letter with salary expectations and links to your work to Chris Cowell at jobs@s8080.com

We look forward to hearing from you.

ALSO – we are also looking for a web project manager and and ASP .NET Web Developer. Take a look at our jobs page.

As ever, we don’t want to hear from recruitment agencies.

Don’t let Wales be a puzzle

We have just completed an interesting little online campaign for Visit Wales.

Based on a concept dreamed up by the Visit Wales team, we designed and built an email and Flash app with a truly retro flavour.

Jigsaw-email_v6b

Our illustrators based the execution on those wonderful little 3D wooden puzzles that you can still find in specialist toy shops. Combined with a retro illustration style and packaging, it’s a fine looking campaign that extols the virtues of the varied regions of Wales, including horned beasts, waterfalls taller than Niagara and our very own monster of the deep called Teggie.

Take a look here and enter the competition to win a hamper full of Welsh goodies.

Forward slashes…

Sir Tim Berners-Lee has said at a symposium on the future of technology that the two forward slashes after http: were not really needed.

“Really, if you think about it, it doesn’t need the //. I could have designed it not to have the //”, he said.

That is a lot of wasted finger energy over the years.

“There you go, it seemed like a good idea at the time.” he said.

Full story here.

Apture

On the S8080 Blog, we’ve recently begun using a really cool service called Apture. Apture allows you to easily incorporate multimedia elements straight into a single web page – or, in this case, a blog post.

Traditionally, a blog entry may contain a link to (for example) a Wikipedia entry, or a YouTube video, or a photo on Flickr – but clicking any of these links would take you away from the original content that you were reading. You’d lose your place, and clicking around to multiple sites while you’re trying to read can just be a pain. Apture’s aim is to bring all of this disparate content together, and try to make the web less flat.

Apture allows you to create special links in your posts that open up snippets of content within the current page. This allows readers to keep their place, look up a particular piece of information, and get right back to what they were doing in the first place.

The easiest way to demonstrate is with an example, of course. So in a blog entry, we could be telling you about Swansea – Apture allows us to link in Wikipedia entries, maps, photos, video… even Twitter tweets! You name it, you can link it in with Apture. It makes web pages much more dynamic, and puts all of this content to really good use. As Apture themselves say:

By transforming flat web pages into connected multimedia experiences readers can fluidly dive into related information without losing their place on the page so they can see, hear and truly experience the ideas on the page.

Exciting stuff!
